Santiago Vidal Freire

Postdoctoral Fellow

Santiago holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Medicine at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), where he worked to describe how different Ebolavirus proteins are modified and regulated by post-translational modifications of the Ubiquitin-like family and novel possible activities for ebolavirus VP24 protein.

Since joining the Palacios Lab in 2022, Santiago has focused on understanding the viral mechanisms that enable pathogens to adapt to and colonize new hosts. His work aims to identify therapeutic strategies that may help prevent future pandemic events, with particular attention to viral agents that pose epidemic risk and currently lack effective vaccines or treatments. He is also developing iPSC- and organoid-derived systems to better understand differences between reservoir and non-reservoir hosts.
